About Amargi e.V.

Who We Are and What We Stand For

The Amargi is a grassroots-funded online media outlet founded by journalists, activists, and academics across Europe.

Who We Are

The Amargi is a grassroots-funded online media outlet founded by journalists, activists, and academics across Europe. The Amargi's spotlight is on Kurdistan, but we also focus on Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran, as well as the broader Middle East.

In a region where undemocratic regimes, foreign intervention, and powerful corporations determine the political discourse and suppress self-determination, dissent, and diversity, we are committed to being a powerful voice for those rendered powerless and voiceless. "Amargi", a Sumerian word, is regarded as the first known written word for "freedom".

While we operate independently of commercial and political influences as a matter of integrity and commitment to journalistic ethics, our position comes with challenges. But we know that an engaged community of supporters can help sustain our mission.

"Amargi" is a Sumerian word and is considered the first known written symbol for "freedom."

Our Structure

Amargi e.V.

is the parent organization.

The Amargi

is the journalistic media project of the association.

Events

& media education are implemented by the association.

Our Values

As the name suggests, freedom, democracy, diversity, coexistence, equality, and social justice are at the center of our work. We research fearlessly, report professionally, and promote values that strengthen society in the Middle East and build bridges between its peoples and communities.

We are committed to social and ethnic minorities and consistently oppose extremism, discrimination, and injustice of any kind.

Media Education That Empowers

We especially support young people, women, and minorities in contextualizing information, questioning sources, and recognizing disinformation, thereby strengthening critical media literacy.

Amargi e.V. organizes events and educational formats — from media workshops and trainings to discussion and cultural formats to networking meetings for exile and local journalists — we create spaces for empowerment, foster collaboration, and enable informed, self-determined, and active participation in the digital public sphere.

Journalism with Impact

Through the media project The Amargi, Amargi e.V. promotes intercultural dialogue and creates spaces for peace, coexistence, and solidarity in the Middle East, Kurdistan, and the diaspora.

Through our independent journalism, media education, exchange, and networking, we support marginalized people in actively contributing to a just, pluralistic society — locally and internationally.

Financial Transparency

Financial transparency is a core principle for us: We disclose our funding and structures, thereby building trust and the foundation for sustainable journalistic independence.

Amargi e.V. works for the common good and is not profit-oriented. Our journalism is freely accessible and is understood as a public good — made possible by donations and support contributions from our community.

We deliberately forgo paywalls, subscription models, and dependencies on media corporations or economic interests. We do not accept funds from governments, parties, or companies that could jeopardize our editorial independence.

Our Funding Sources

Private Donations

Individual donations, regular contributions, and Supporters from our community form the backbone of our work and secure it for the long term.

Institutional Donations

Foundations, institutions, and companies that share our values support our projects.

Own Revenue

For example through publications or educational offerings that additionally strengthen our work.

Team

"Three things unite us: the passion for investigative journalism, the realization that we achieve more as a team than alone, and the conviction that we can trigger positive social change through our work."

We are based in Leipzig and work with local and international partners in the Middle East.
