Mentoring Weekend for Emerging Journalists

Leipzig · 5–6 September 2026

Amargi e.V. invites emerging journalists, media makers, writers, students, young professionals and people interested in independent journalism to apply for the Mentoring Weekend for Emerging Journalists in Leipzig.

The program is designed for people who want to strengthen their journalistic skills, develop critical media practices and tell stories rooted in their own communities, experiences and perspectives — especially those with migration, exile or diaspora backgrounds connected to Kurdistan, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran and the wider MENA region.

Many stories from these contexts remain unheard, underrepresented or misrepresented in mainstream media. This mentoring weekend creates a space for learning, exchange and practice, while exploring how journalism can strengthen democracy, media literacy and diverse public debate.

During the weekend, participants will work on journalistic basics such as research, fact-checking, source evaluation, disinformation, social media journalism, digital publics and journalistic ethics. The program combines short inputs, practical exercises, media analysis, group discussions, peer feedback and space to develop your own journalistic ideas.

Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own perspectives and explore how personal, local and transnational experiences can become the basis for responsible and powerful journalism. Selected ideas may later be further developed through The Amargi.

Participation is free of charge. Places are limited and refreshments will be provided. Participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs where possible. Limited financial support may be available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

The mentoring weekend is planned as the first step of a longer mentoring process. Depending on further funding, it may be followed by additional in-person follow-up weekends and online mentoring sessions, allowing participants to continue developing their journalistic ideas, receive feedback and build a supportive peer network over time.

Who can apply?

The program is open to emerging journalists, media makers, writers, students, young professionals and people interested in independent journalism. Previous experience is welcome, but not required. What matters most is interest, motivation and a willingness to learn, reflect and exchange with others.
