Exile Talks: Kurdistan | April 22, Berlin
The event, organized in partnership between The Amargi and CORRECTIV, brought together journalists, media workers, and an audience of more than 120 in Berlin. Held on April 22 to mark Kurdish Journalism Day, the occasion recognized the role of Kurdish-affiliated media in documenting political struggle, displacement, and cultural life across Kurdistan and the diaspora, under conditions of censorship, conflict, and exile. An exhibition was also presented in honor of silenced Kurdish journalists who have been killed, disappeared, or imprisoned because of their work, including while reporting in conflict zones.
CORRECTIV hosted the event, a public-interest media organization focused on strengthening democracy through investigative journalism and civic education. The conference was part of its broader Exile Talks series, which explores how journalism, culture, and political thought are reshaped by exile and migration.
The conference was moderated by Rosa Burç, a sociologist, Kurdistan expert, and currently a research associate at the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM).
Speakers:
Kamal Chomani, editor-in-chief of The Amargi, spoke about the organization’s mission of connecting communities and celebrating diversity across Kurdistan, the diaspora, and the wider Middle East.
Rezzan Gümgüm, co-founder of Zer, a nonprofit initiative of Kurdish women cultural producers, spoke about the challenges of creating platforms for Kurdish women’s art in exile.
